HONG KONG - All Hong Kong citizens are to receive a free reusable CuMask+ face mask from the government.

Developed by the Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel, the CuMask+ is a six-layer mask with special ergonomic features.

Two of its layers contain copper which is capable of immobilising bacteria, common viruses and other harmful substances.

The mask complies with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) F2100 Level 1 Standard in terms of particle filtration efficiency, bacterial filtration efficiency, resistance to penetration by synthetic blood, flammability and pressure resistance, and is reusable for up to 60 washes.

From May 6th, all holders of valid Hong Kong identity cards have been eligible to obtain a CuMask+™ by simply registering on the CuMask+ website (qmask.gov.hk). Inevitably, the website was overloaded on May 6th, as over 50,000 applicants immediately queued to register their details.

The registration period will last until June 6 theand each registration can cater for a maximum of six persons. In general, on successful registration, the CuMask+ will be delivered to the door by Hongkong Post within two weeks.

Masks for children are being delivered directly to schools and the government has also arranged delivery of over 140,000 masks to residential homes and social welfare institutions for the elderly and the homeless.

Hong Kong has suffered from shortages of masks since protestors began using them to avoid recognition and China subsequently stopped supplying them.
