BRUSSELS - Nonwovens industry trade body EDANA has published a response to  the UK government's consultation on a proposal to ban plastic in certain wet wipes in the UK, highlighting the vital role that wipes play in the hygiene sector and also outlining the efforts being taken by the industry to address sustainability issues across the marketplace.

A key measure in the UK Government’s Plan for Water, the proposed ban forms part of the government’s work to ensure there is more investment, stronger regulation and tougher enforcement across the water system, helping tackle plastic and microplastic pollution and improve water quality.

The plans have been set out in a joint consultation, which has been launched to seek views on banning the manufacture, supply and sale of plastic-containing wet wipes across the UK.

Responding to UK announcement, Gloria Jaconelli communications and PR director at EDANA said the industry supported government and stakeholder efforts to reduce pollution and sewer blockages, while ensuring that consumers, the NHS, social care, and businesses can continue to benefit from the fundamental uses and advantages that wet wipes provide.
