NEUMÜNSTER – Oerlikon Neumag has successfully commissioned three staple fibre bicomponent systems for use in nonwoven-based absorbent hygiene products in China.

The systems – each with daily capacities of 50 tons – are being used to manufacture core/sheath bicomponent fibres made from PP/PE or PET/PE at the plants of two long-standing Oerlikon customers.

Despite coronavirus-related restrictions, the three new systems were installed within a few months, all without any problems. They have been operating under stable production conditions with optimum fibre quality for several weeks now.

Oerlikon Neumag has many years of experience in constructing bicomponent staple fibre systems, with the first commissioned in 1995.

The company offers solutions for the most varied cross-sections, ranging from sheath/core, side-by-side, islands in the sea and orange peel types to trilobal structures. The applications for these range from self-crimping or bonding fibres to super-microfibres and hollow fibres.

Oerlikon Neumag’s bicomponent technology is characterised by extremely robust spin packs that have no expensive wear parts, which considerably reduces costs, and reconditioning costs when cleaning the spin packs are also kept to an absolute minimum. There is a separate temperature transfer option in the spinning beam for the two polymers, ensuring that the quality and the viscosity of the polymers can be accurately adjusted in accordance with process requirements.
