DORNBIRN – Aerogel nonwovens are being investigated as a potential new insulation material for hybrid diesel engines in Germany.

There is a need for a new insulation solution for such engines – which have been developed primarily to reduce CO2 emissions – because they can lose heat and it is hard to optimise their temperature with conventionally-used materials which have high thermal conductivities, need too much space and are too heavy.

Requirements for an effective solution, in addition to strong thermal and acoustic insulation properties, are being as lightweight as possible, non-flammable and with minimal space requirements. Aerogel nonwovens, it is believed, could fit the bill.
