A multi-partner research team is seeking to exploit graphene as a surface coating and set new standards in personal protective equipment (PPE).

The EU-funded Grafat project involves the companies IoLiTec Ionic Liquids Technologies, based in Heilbronn, Germany, Fuchshuber Techno-Tex of Lichtenstein and Soieries Elite of Belgium, along with the Hohenstein Institute and Centexbel.

Over the next three years, the consortium will be investigating to what extent the surface of textiles and nonwovens can be changed using graphene modifications, specifically with a view to later applying the process to heat protective clothing.
