ETH researchers in Switzerland have developed a sustainable process for making large amounts of polylactic acid from glycerol – a waste by-product in the production of biodiesel.
Being biodegradable and made from renewable resources, PLA has already been commercialised, notably by NatureWorks in a range of plastic products, in addition to nonwoven materials.
