Hemp, as a type of cannabis, has been refined into fibres, fabrics and other products for centuries, but because commercial varieties are the same species as marijuana and contain very low levels of THC (the psychoactive phytocannabinoid ?9-tetrahydrocannabinol), its production in the west has been greatly limited in recent decades.
22nd Century Group is hoping to change this in the USA. Its wholly-owned subsidiary, Botanical Genetics, has just entered into a worldwide license agreement with Anandia Laboratories granting it exclusive rights in the US to four genes required for cannabinoid production in the cannabis plant.
