As it works towards the start-up of its first commercial plant in 2014, Dutch developer of biofibres and bioplastics Avantium has been named the European Cleantech Company of the Decade by Cleantech Group (CTG).
At the end of 2013, in significant breakthrough for the biopolymers industry, the company – which has collaborations with Coca-Cola Company and Danone – successfully demonstrated that its PEF (polyethylene furanoate) can be successfully turned into fibres for the nonwovens and textiles industries.
At the Institute of Textile Technology at RWTH Aachen University in Germany, PEF bottles have been processed into 100% bio-based T-shirts using conventional polyester processing technology and equipment.
