The development of a substitute for diatomite in pre-coat filtration in the brewing industry is currently the subject of a joint research project between viscose specialist Kelheim Fibres and Krones AG,

Krones AG, headquartered in Neutraubling, Germany, has been supplying breweries with complete systems for the beer production process since 1951.

In recent years diatomite has come under criticism as its heavy dust emissions have proven to be damaging to the health of the user's operatives and also because of the increasing cost of its disposal.
