Shanghai-headquartered China Wanhua Chemical Group – which has reported sales of $2.5 billion for the first nine months of 2013, up 35% on 2012 – plans to open a new superabsorbent polymer (SAP) plant in Yantai, Shandong.
The first phase of the project will see production of an annual 30,000 tons once competed during 2014. The eventual plan is to expand to a capacity of 120,000 tons.
The company observed that the global consumption of SAP in 2012 reached 1.7 million tons, 90% of which went into personal hygiene products based on nonwovens. SAP growth in the next five years is likely to be around an annual 20% in line with forecasts for diaper sales.
