The Silivri district of Istanbul in Turkey is the location for a new US$30 million plant that has just been opened by Zele, Belgium-headquartered hygiene products leader Ontex.
The plant will manufacture Canbebe-branded nonwoven hygiene products, a business which Ontex acquired from Turkey’s Astel Kagitcilik in 2000. It will employ 500 people.
“Our investment in Istanbul is an indication of our strong confidence in Turkey,” said Ontex CEO Charles Bouaziz.
Turkey’s Minister of Economy, Zafer Caglayan, attending the opening ceremony, said that Turkey had led the European economies in GDP growth for the second quarter.
“Turkey has attracted over one hundred and twenty seven billion dollars of foreign investment over the last ten years, some seventy-five per cent of that amount originated in Europe,” he said, adding that Turkey’s stability, potential and the investment incentives had been critical in attracting foreign companies.
Ontex achieved sales of €1.3 billion in 2012, up 7.5% on 2011, with earnings of €150.1 million.
