Having earlier announced a partnership with Dow, OPX Biotechnologies, which describes itself as being in the business of ‘good chemistry’, is now linking up with Evonik Industries to jointly develop bio-based chemicals.
Both Dow and Evonik are suppliers to the nonwoven disposables market and the OPX Bio partnership with Dow is aiming to bring BioAcrylic – as a direct and more-sustainable replacement for petro-based acrylic acid – into the $10-billion acrylic acid market. Among other uses, acrylic acid is the basis for the superabsorbent polymers employed in diapers, femcare and AI products.
A similar partnership looking at a process for acrylic acid based on sustainable feedstocks is in place between BASF, Cargill and Novozymes.
