International packaging and paper group Mondi has received public recognition for its sustainability initiatives in the form of five awards – from WWF International and Pulp and Paper International (PPI).
The company was announced the winner of the Environmental Strategy of the Year 2012 award by PPI in recognition of its approach in managing the social, environmental, safety and health impacts of products through their life-cycle.
The PPI Awards recognise the achievements of companies, mills and individuals in the global pulp and paper sector. Mondi SCP in Slovakia also received the top prize for Managing Risk and Safety 2012 and Energy Improvements of the Year 2012.
WWF International subsequently announced Mondi as one of the winners of the Environmental Paper Awards 2012 in the category ‘Transparency’ and the “Best Environmental Performance Paper Brands Award” for its 100% recycled Nautilus SuperWhite product.
“Mondi has been applauded by WWF for transparency on its environmental footprint, showing that the company takes its environmental and social responsibility seriously,” said Emmanuelle Neyroumande, manager of WWF International ´s global pulp and paper work. “We welcome that Mondi has published 92% of Mondi-branded uncoated fine papers on the WWF’s database of eco-rated papers.”
Among other things, recovered paper has become an indispensable raw material for Mondi’s business an, in 2011 it consumed 1.5 million tonnes of recovered fibre, amounting to 30% of total pulp consumed.
