Environmental news and technical innovation in the nonwovens sector

KARLSBAD - As part of its Herrmann Cares initiative, ultrasonic welding equipment specialist Herrmann Ultraschall has been supporting The Ocean Cleanup campaign.

The latest endeavour is a 2022 Christmas donation of €10,000 to the non-profit organization to help remove plastic waste from the oceans.

“With our ultrasonics welding technology, we can contribute to a functioning circular economy. But we know that many plastic products are still not disposed of properly and end up in the environment instead," said CEO Thomas Herrmann, explaining the motivation behind the donation. "That's why we want to help recover this valuable raw material to prevent damage to the environment."

The Ocean Cleanup uses a specially developed collection system for the extraction. With the help of the ocean current, plastic pieces ranging in size from several metres to a few millimeters can be collected without disturbing local ecosystems. The collected plastic will be recycled and reused for new products. Currently, the systems are primarily used to clean up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, but are expected to help eliminate plastic waste globally in the future.
