Environmental news and technical innovation in the nonwovens sector

NEUWIED - Since its 2018 takeover of German hygiene machinery specialist BICMA, W+D has been working successfully on merging the two organizations into one new brand, W+D BICMA Hygiene Solutions.

“By unifying all hygiene machinery expertise from both W+D and BICMA under one roof at our headquarters in Neuwied, Germany," said Marc Wolpers, vice president Sales & Market Development Hygiene Solutions at W+D BICMA, “we have now achieved the ideal conditions for our growth plans whilst at the same time ensuring that our customers can take advantage of an improved service.”

W+D BICMA Hygiene Solutions offers converting equipment for Baby Care, Feminine Care, Light Incontinence, Adult Care, Folded Tissue and Face Masks. Known as an innovative, flexible and sustainable company, W+D BICMA also has a strong focus on ecological concepts for the tissue and hygiene sectors. At the upcoming INDEX exhibition - booth 2580 - the company will be presenting its latest developments for product, process and packaging in these industries. “This will include smart innovations,” Wolpers explained. “Which will enable our customers to take a major step towards more sustainable production.”

As Wolpers highlighted: “If you take into account that the typical PE single-wrap package of a night size feminine napkins annually generates approximately 25 million m² of plastic waste, this is equivalent to an area of approximately 3,500 soccer fields. As a sustainable solution, the new W+D BICMA Green Manta process replaces PE single-wrap for femcare and light incontinence products using an inline-manufactured paper envelope (see image right).”

The process blends existing technology from both BICMA and W+D, and combines them with new ideas. "This first joint development project of the W+D and BICMA team clearly reveals how strong and competitive the new brand is. The synergy of experience and expertise of two teams merged into one will result in many more new ideas in the future," Wolpers said, adding that “the Green Manta technology is available for new machines and as upgrade for existing lines of any brand.”

A further concept for reducing PE single-wrap is to produce small-count take-away packages of, for example, four to five products in a reclosable small bag. This technology is based on the established W+D BICMA FLOWTOS technology, which already has a proven reputation in W+D's tissue converters for the manufacture and wrapping of handkerchiefs.

In addition to these single-wrap innovations, W+D BICMA will also present its new baby pants machine. As well as its compact design, the main benefits of this high-speed machine lie in its extremely short size-change times and the twin-bonding technology to achieve ultra-narrow, soft product side-seams. Short size-change times are possible by means of two complete pre-assembled and pre-adjusted S2S modules. With the simple plug-and-play change of these modules, size-change time and effort is cut down to a minimum. The company's well-known solutions for glueless bonding, zero waste and low energy consumption are available for all machine platforms.

The Covid 19 crisis also led W+D BICMA to develop high-speed solutions for surgical mask and FFP mask converting. At INDEX, the company will present fully automated technology for the production of various mask types with unique features. “One highlight is a flexible machine to produce three different mask designs with minimum change-over times. With such a production line fulfilling the requirements of different market segments, our customers can be sure to secure a stable post-Covid business," Wolpers said.
