Universal FibersUniversal Fibers, based in Bristol, Virginia, has purchased the continuous filament bicomponent production assets of Fiber Innovation Technology.

FIT, based in Johnson City, Tennessee, develops and produces bicomponent and other customised fibres for nonwovens and high performance fabrics.

“This is a key purchase and one we are thrilled to be making,” said Marc Ammen, Universal CEO. “As we continue to grow in solution-dyed commercial, residential and automotive carpet fibre, this supports our market diversification strategy.”

“Bicomponent technology offers varied and distinct advantages, since it accommodates fibre constructions tailored for more specific functions including anti-static, conductive, antimicrobial, super hydrophilic, super hydrophobic, stain resistance, low melt and heat resistance,” added Don Berlin, technical sales and business development manager. “These advantages yield benefits in performance, cost savings and reduced lead times. Universal will support a diverse customer base with small lot capabilities in various chemistries including nylon, PP, PET and other traditional and non-traditional fibre polymers.”
