packAt the point where nonwovens and paper products merge, Amcor Packpyrus is a new thermoformable cellulose-based packaging solution for the fresh food market being introduced by Amcor Flexibles.

As a result of its oxygen barrier it is particularly suitable for pre-sliced products such as meat or cheese and is being supplied in three versions – Flexible for vacuum pack base webs and Semi-Rigid and Rigid for modified atmosphere base webs.

The Flexible and Rigid solutions are said to set themselves apart from the traditional solutions by offering significant improvement in life cycle performance. As a result of their lightness, the use of renewable fibres and optimised manufacturing processes they offer an impressive reduction in the cradle-to-gate carbon footprint of such about 70% and 60%, respectively.

CEREC (the French Committee for the Evaluation of Recyclability of Paper and Cardboard Packaging) has recently published a favourable technical assessment of two of the Packpyrus formats. As such, packaging made from them is allowed to feature the Info Tri Point Vert (Waste Sorting Green Dot) pictogram, which was created by Eco Emballages to help encourage consumers to correctly sort their household waste for recycling.

In addition to its environmental credentials, Amcor Packpyrus is also creating particular interest in the packaging world due to its ‘Kraft paper’ natural look and feel which brings enhanced product differentiation on the shelf.
