CREMA - Italy's GDM has developed a new extra thin core technology which is said to be suitable for comfortable, high-performance diapers.

The new Extra Thin Core uses a specific mix and allocation of fluff and SAP featuring permanent channels construction to ensure fast absorbency and the required wetness distribution.

Properties such as skin-friendliness, softness, and comfort, have also been demonstrated following benchmark lab tests in collaboration with an external independent laboratory.

According to GDM, re-wet tests assessing diaper surface dryness showed improvements of +40% on daily use and +30% on night use compared to the best selling open diaper with permanent channels.

"Globally, the baby diapers and pants market is strongly investing in product focusing on quality: improving performances is key for manufacturers to match consumers’ needs, ensuring skin protection and comfort, thanks to thin and light solutions," the company said. "To comply with these purchasing drivers, we have developed an innovative Core, generating value throughout the manufacturing supply chain."

GDM also noted benefits from weight and size comparisons with the Extra Thin Core saving up to 800 k€ of raw materials per year, according to the company's internal estimation on fluff and SAP consumption for 260 million pcs/year, compared to the previous core formation process.
