    Emerging markets for BASF SAPs

basfsapSuperabsorbent polymers (SAPs) have been one of the keys to nonwoven disposable products becoming ever lighter and better performing over the last thirty years.

BASF, as a leader in the production of SAPs, is now strengthening its position in the field in emerging markets with new manufacturing plants in both Camaçari, Brazil, and Nanjing, China, – each with an annual capacity of 60,000 tons.

In South America, BASF’s Camaçari, production is expected to start in late 2014.

In China, BASF-YPC – a 50-50 joint venture between BASF and Sinopec, will start construction of a new plant in mid-2012, again with commercial production planned for the beginning of 2014.

kevProtection – along with food and energy – are the three key areas in which DuPont is committed to making a solid contribution to a sustainable future, and its advanced fibres and nonwovens will have a decisive role to play.

The company has just started up its $500 million Cooper River Kevlar facility near Charleston in South Carolina and commercial supply will begin from it by the end of the year.
Overall global production capacity for Kevlar will increase initially by 25% and with planned productivity improvements and continued technology developments is expected to grow by 40% over the next two years.

“As the global population grows, there will be even more critical need for protection materials to keep people safe and to protect the environment, structures and critical processes,” said Thomas G. Powell, president, DuPont Protection Technologies. “After more than 40 years, the proven performance of Kevlar continues to create significant new opportunities where the combination of lightweight strength and other unique properties enable new designs, increase reliability and save more lives.”

    Sensitive handling for hygienic disposables

optimaNonwoven disposable hygiene products are lightweight, compressible and as a consequence sensitive. In addition, their dimensions vary within certain tolerances and traditional palletizing methods can often result in unstable stacks.

To resolve these issues, Optima is introducing the new RTP 25 palletizer specifically for nonwoven disposables.

It has a motor-driven gripper equipped with angled edges at the bottom which increases gripping security and operating speed. The angled edges allow a significant reduction of the gripping force, ensuring that the sensitive nonwoven products can retain their shape.

Simultaneously, the device allows the use of a faster robot and the vertically moving frame is particularly suitable for lightweight disposable hygiene products, since it firmly holds the compact and stable stack formations in place.

    Regranulation for greener productivity

starAt the recent ITMA textile machinery show in Barcelona, Spain, Austria-headquartered Starlinger was promoting its recycling equipment for fibre and spunmelt nonwoven production scrap.

Primary polymer resin is a considerable cost factor in these production processes, and although zero scrap in production is the goal, it is never entirely possible. Consequently, the recycling of production scrap can considerably contribute to competitiveness.

At the same time, environmental consciousness and resource conservation call for recycling, but quality requirements in the industry are very high. The challenge, says Starlinger, is to provide equipment capable of handling a variety of in-house production scrap materials with different characteristics, while ensuring that the regranulate – even in a high proportion – does not negatively influence the production process.

    FSC first for Kimberly-Clark

FSCKimberly-Clark is the first US company to offer branded consumer tissue products that meet the rigorous sustainable sourcing requirements of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

The company’s Kleenex facial tissue and Scott Naturals products sold in North America now include fibre sourced from suppliers who have been independently certified to follow the highest standards in forestry management while also protecting high conservation-value forests and habitat.

Consumers can now identify FSC-certified Kleenex and Scott brand products by the FSC label on every package.

“This is a major milestone in K-C’s sustainability journey and a significant step forward in the consumer adoption of FSC-certified fibre for bathroom tissue, facial tissue and paper towels,” said Suhas Apte, vice president of global sustainability. “K-C’s commitment to FSC certification will grow the demand for sustainably sourced fibre and will encourage more suppliers to practice responsible forest management.”

Forest Stewardship Council certification is a market-based, non-regulatory forest conservation system that is recognised globally for having the highest social and environmental standards in forestry. The programme uses third-party experts to verify forest management practices and track materials as they leave the forest and become products downstream. Any FSC labeled product can be traced back through the chain of custody to a certified source.

“Kimberly-Clark’s decision to adopt FSC certification for all Kleenex and Scott Naturals brand products is a major leap forward for the health of the world’s forests,” said Corey Brinkema, president of the FSC’s US national office. “Kimberly-Clark’s leadership is setting the pace for the industry, and we hope other personal care manufacturers will soon follow suit.”

    Smarter process for automotive carpet

dryFrench technology specialist Fibroline has adapted its DPreg process for the automotive carpet sector – which uses an estimated 200 square metres of carpet annually – claiming a Techtextil 2011 Innovation Award for the development.

Automotive carpets are usually made with polyester nonwovens, impregnated and bonded with a latex coating on the back. The latex binder creates an end-product with high abrasion resistance, mouldability and stiffness, but the process for applying it is very energy intensive and creates both pollutants and wastewater. The latex coating also prevents the product from being recycled.
